Which Airlines Gets Most Internet Searches in Maryland?

Christopher Boan Profile Picture

The only airline with a focus city or hub at the lone international gateway inside the Old Line State failed to live up to the hype when it came to popularity among Maryland residents.

Southwest Airlines, which carried 70.9% of passengers (16,821,000 of them, to be exact) between November 2022 and October 2023, is the fourth-most popular airline in Maryland, with a search interest score of 41.

BetMaryland.com took a break from Maryland sports betting before March Madness to look at the airlines most searched by Maryland residents.

Southwest was trounced by Delta and American, carriers that have a minimal presence at BWI. No. 1 was Delta Air Lines (which ranks third at the airport, carrying 1,563,000 passengers, or 6.59% of the total market share), followed by American Airlines (which ranks fourth, at 998,000, or 4.21%).

BetMaryland.com – your source for Maryland betting apps – used Google Trends to analyze the most popular airlines of Maryland residents by looking at the search results of each airline over the last 90 days (December to March).

Closer Look at the Data

While Southwest has become the go-to option for air travel out of the Charm City, their search interest score does not reflect as such. The Texas-based carrier notched a score of 41 to finish behind Delta (65), American (64) and Spirit Airlines (54).

Of the three, only Spirit has a significant presence at BWI, carrying 1,912,000 passengers (or 8.06% of BWI’s total market share) to finish the year as a distant second place option behind Southwest.

United Airlines rounded out the Maryland airlines list with a search interest score of 30, which comes on the heels of the Chicago carrier hauling 948,000 (or 3.99% of BWI’s market share) in the most recent survey.

For now, Southwest Airlines fans will have to settle for the more than 1,300 weekly flights that the carrier operates out of BWI to destinations across the country and as far away as Belize City in Central America and Cabo San Lucas on the southwestern most shores of Mexico.
