Now that we’re just over a week away from Christmas Day and a few weeks from the dawn of a new year, it’s worth looking back and wondering what residents searched for the most during 2024 in the home of Maryland sportsbooks.

In Maryland, the most popular Google search terms were things about things like The New York Times’ newest word game, results from the 2024 election and searches about the Democratic Party’s candidate in that presidential race (Kamala Harris).

Using Google Trends, BetMaryland.com analyzed the most searched terms in the state of Maryland from Jan. 1 to Dec. 10. 2024. We finalized the Top 10 queries by using the terms that have seen the biggest increase in search volume over the year of 2024.

Which Search Topics Became Prominent in 2024?

When it came to search queries, no topic scored a bigger year-over-year jump than the “Gray Old Lady’s” newest word game. Queries for The New York Times’ ‘Strands’ had the largest surge compared to 2023, gaining 1,550% fin a year-over-year comparison.

That surge beat out “Election Results,” which saw a 1,400% jump year-over-year, while searches for Harris grew by 1,000% in 2024 to take the third spot in Maryland.

Throw in another New York Times word game, “Connections,” and WNBA star guard Caitlin Clark —both with 400% increases — and you have the top five in the Old Line State, which offers legal, regulated Maryland sportsbook apps.

“Powerlifting Paralympics 2024” saw a 350% jump to lead off the second five on the list of searches that surged into prominence during 2024. Rounding out that list were the topics “Nvidia Stock” (+250%), “Trump” (+200%), “Yankees” (+140%) and “Chiefs” (+100%), with those four search topics ranking in spots seven through 10 in Maryland.

Still, when it comes to search topics, nothing tops The New York Times’ newest word game, as “Strands” took home the top spot when it came to year-over-year search query increases in the state during 2024.
