On the heels of a 2024 season where the Terrapins endured a 4-8 clunker, Maryland college football fans are left wondering what’s to come this fall.
One thing is certain: Coach Mike Locksley and company are starting fresh under center. BetMaryland.com broke down the odds on who the Terps’ QB1 will be when Maryland hosts Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30.
Quarterback | Year | Odds | Percent Chance |
Justyn Martin | RS JR | +110 | 47.6% |
Malik Washington | FR | +125 | 44.4% |
Khristian Martin | RS FR | +450 | 18.2% |
The Field | +100000 | 0.1% |

As Locksley prepares for his seventh season in charge of the Big Ten program, it’s worth wondering where the Terps may go in 2025, as the program looks to get back to the level of play that saw the Terrapins reach a bowl game in three successive seasons before 2024.
UCLA transfer Justyn Martin is battling Severn native Malik Washington in the race to be QB1 in 2025. Washington arrived in College Park as a four-star prospect out of Archbishop Spalding High School, about 25 miles from Maryland's campus.
Washington’s high-profile status as a prized in-state recruit would indicate that he’d be a strong candidate to build around, but it doesn’t look like the No. 10 QB in the Class of 2025 will start against the Owls. ESPN.com and other media outlets are going with the former Bruins QB as their pick to start in Week 1.
This story is part of the Maryland sports betting insight we’ll offer throughout the college football season.
We rated Washington as the most likely pick, with +110 odds, in our initial predictions in late July. He started for three years at Spalding, racking up 7,161 yards through the air with 74 touchdowns, plus 701 yards and 19 TDs on the ground for the Cavaliers. But now we tip Martin at +110 odds, compared to +125 for Washington.
Either way, Maryland will count on the starting quarterback to buoy an offense that finished 17th nationally in passing in 2024 (at 275.7 yards per game) but 116th in rushing (110.6 ypg) and tied for 102nd in scoring (23.7 points a game).
Martin arrives at Maryland after throwing for 179 yards and a touchdown in limited reps last fall for UCLA, which is now Maryland's Big Ten rival. Another player named Martin, redshirt freshman Khristian (no relation), is a redshirt freshman out of Highland Springs. Khristian Martin was a three-star recruit out of high school and sits third on our UMD starting QB odds board, at +450.
If Justyn Martin gets the nod as ESPN.com expects, he’d be pressed to replicate the success that last year’s Terrapins’ QB1 (Billy Edwards Jr.) achieved. The 6-foot-3 QB threw for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns and added five scores on the ground in Maryland’s disappointing 2024 campaign.
These odds are exclusive to BetMaryland.com. The odds at Maryland sportsbook apps, were they offered, would suggest a relatively tight three-way race for UM’s starting job.
According to UMTerps.com, the official website of Maryland athletics, there are five quarterbacks on the roster as of Aug. 15. But it’s very unlikely that the starter will come from outside the top three candidates.
Regardless of who takes the top team snaps come Aug. 30, Maryland is currently listed as a 14.5-point home favorite over FAU in Week 1 with BetMGM Sportsbook Maryland. The Terps have +50000 odds with the operator to win the Big Ten and +5500 odds to make the 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Justyn Martin, a transfer from UCLA, now leads our odds at +110, with a 44% implied chance of starting. Local recruit Malik Washington (+125 odds) is still very much in the mix, though.
Yes. It’s a three-way battle among Washington, UCLA transfer Justyn Martin and redshirt freshman Khristian Martin. No starter has been officially named.
Coaches evaluate camp performance, command of the offense and leadership traits. Experience and composure under pressure will play crucial roles as well.
It’s extremely unlikely. The “field” is given only a 0.1% chance, meaning the starter is overwhelmingly expected to be one of the top three options.
