On the heels of a 2024 season where the Terrapins endured a 4-8 clunker, Maryland college football fans are left wondering what’s to come this fall.
One thing is certain: Coach Mike Locksley and company are starting fresh under center. BetMaryland.com broke down the odds on who the Terps’ QB1 will be when Maryland hosts Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30.
Quarterback | Year | Odds | Percent Chance |
Malik Washington | FR | +110 | 44.0% |
Justyn Martin | RS JR | +150 | 36.7% |
Khristian Martin | RS FR | +400 | 18.2% |
The Field |
| +100000 | 0.1% |
These odds are exclusive to BetMaryland.com, your source for the best Maryland sports betting promo codes all season.
As Locksley prepares for his seventh season in charge of the Big Ten program, it’s worth wondering where the Terps may go in 2025, as the program looks to get back to the level of play that saw the Terrapins reach a bowl game in three successive seasons before 2024.
We rate Severn native Malik Washington as most likely to be QB1 in 2025. He came to Maryland as a four-star prospect out of Archbishop Spalding High School.
Washington beats out a duo of redshirt freshman on our debut odds board. This story is part of the Maryland sports betting insight we’ll offer throughout the college football season.
Given Washington’s high-profile status as an in-state recruit out of a Jesuit high school, it seems highly likely that the No. 10 QB in the Class of 2025 will start against the Owls. We give the true freshman +110 odds of being QB1 in Week 1 for the Terrapins.
Washington started for three years at Spalding, racking up 7,161 yards through the air with 74 touchdowns, plus 701 yards and 19 TDs on the ground for the Cavaliers.
If Locksley goes with Washington against FAU, the freshman will be counted on to buoy an offense that finished 17th nationally in passing in 2024 (at 275.7 yards per game) but 116th in rushing (110.6 ypg) and tied for 102nd in scoring (23.7 points a game).
Solely based on the success that Washington achieved at the parochial school, it looks like he’s a surefire bet to be Maryland’s Week 1 starting quarterback.
But don’t discount two unrelated players with the same last name. Justyn Martin and Khristian Martin have +150 and +400 odds, respectively, on our board. Those odds at Maryland sportsbook apps, were they offered, would suggest a relatively tight three-way race for UM’s starting job.
Justyn Martin threw for 179 yards and a touchdown in limited reps last fall with UCLA before arriving in College Park during the offseason out of transfer portal. Khristian Martin is a redshirt freshman out of Highland Springs, Virginia, and was a three-star recruit out of high school.
According to UMTerps.com, the official website of Maryland athletics, there are five quarterbacks on the roster as of July 31. But it’s very unlikely that the starter will come from outside the top three candidates.
Regardless of who takes the top team snaps come Aug. 30, Maryland is currently listed as a 15.5-point home favorite over FAU in Week 1 with BetMGM Sportsbook Maryland. The Terps have +30000 odds with the operator to win the Big Ten and +5500 odds to make the 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Malik Washington, a highly regarded true freshman, leads the odds at +110, with a 44% implied chance of starting. His strong spring performance and upside out of high school have impressed the coaching staff.
Yes. It’s a three-way battle among Washington, UCLA transfer Justyn Martin (36.7% chance), and redshirt freshman Khristian Martin (18.2%). No starter has been officially named.
Coaches evaluate camp performance, command of the offense and leadership traits. Experience and composure under pressure will play crucial roles as well.
It’s extremely unlikely. The “field” is given only a 0.1% chance, meaning the starter is overwhelmingly expected to be one of the top three options.
