After an offseason of hope, it’s fair to say that the opening month of the 2025 MLB season has been anything but pretty for fans of the Baltimore Orioles, as the team finds itself last in the five-team American League East with an 11-18 (.379) record. To get a sense of how poor Baltimore Orioles playoff chances are now, BetMaryland.com broke down the April winning percentages of each O’s team since 2000.

*One game left in April

Baltimore has one more game remaining this month, tonight at home against the New York Yankees. But win or lose tonight, this April will still rank No. 5 on the list of the team’s worst starts since 2000.

What Does Orioles Slow Start Indicate?

To sum it up neatly, this April does not indicate good things. The 2025 O’s squad goes into the last day of April 6.5 games back of the Yankees in the AL East with a minus-50 run differential. That run differential is the worst in the AL (even worse than the Chicago White Sox, who are 7-21 with an RD of minus-30). Only the Colorado Rockies, who are 4-25, have a larger gulf between runs scored and runs allowed, at minus-78 as of April 29.

Will this lead to the Orioles making moves? We have Cedric Mullins trade odds updated on this topic.

This April has put Baltimore well behind the curve in the club’s quest to make the postseason for a third straight season. Other woebegone Os teams started worse: In 2010 the Orioles were .217 in April; in 2018 they were .269, in 2019 they were .296 and just three years ago the team stood at .333 a month into the season.

The 2022 team turned things around well enough to finish with a winning record at 83-79, starting to show glimpses of the postseason team they’d become in 2023 and ’24. So not all is lost for the team’s backers at Maryland sportsbooks.

Can Orioles Turn Things Around?

For now, manager Brandon Hyde and his staff have a task in trying to turn things around as the calendar flips to May. Baltimore starts the month with a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals, which begins Friday after an off day on Thursday.

With any luck, the O’s can summon their history of diamond magic to make a comeback, as Baltimore’s first month-plus of the season has been an absolute nightmare. Early hopes of success look more and more like a season of discontent in the Charm City this baseball season.

And if the Orioles can’t get things going, then Ryan Mountcastle trade odds might start to pick up more steam.
