After the franchise’s first trip to the NFC Championship Game since 1991, it seems there’s no stopping the Washington Commanders. The NFL franchise won out when it came to the most popular professional sports team located in the Old-Line State this year, even over Baltimore’s two major pro sports teams, at least according to internet search interest.

BetMaryland.com, your home for Maryland sportsbook promo codes, was curious about which professional sports teams are favorites among Maryland residents. We used SEMRush.com to rank the top five most searched professional Maryland-based sports teams.

The NFC stalwart, whose stadium is in Landover, just a few miles east of Washington, D.C., pulled down more than 1.8 million in search volume during the period in question. That was well ahead of Washington’s fellow ‘DMV’ NFL franchise (the Baltimore Ravens) and the Baltimore Orioles for the top spot for 2025 in the land of Maryland sports betting.

Which Pro Team is Maryland’s Favorite?

Based on the digital tea leaves known as search volume totals, we can ascertain that the Commanders are Maryland’s favorite professional sports team, despite carrying the name of the nation’s capital.

The Commanders had a search volume total of 1.830 million. The Orioles and Ravens drew 1.220 million in search volume apiece to finish in a tie for second statewide. Two minor-league baseball teams in the O’s system (the Double-A Chesapeake Baysox in Bowie and the MLB Draft League’s Frederick Keys) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Keep up with Baltimore Orioles World Series odds with BetMaryland all season.

Of the latter two teams, the Baysox had the higher search volume total (combined searches for “Bowie Baysox” and the new “Chesapeake Baysox”) at 15,800. The minor-league team in Frederick had a total search volume of 8,100 during the period in question.

When it comes to team popularity in Maryland, there’s still no stopping the three-time Super Bowl champions that play their games down in Landover. The Commanders reign supreme when it comes to popularity in the Old-Line State, beating out the two teams in the state’s biggest city.
