The new year represents the 50th year of The Maryland Lottery and the golden anniversary will mean some serious gold for a handful of lucky winners.

Specifically, a new high-end $50 scratch-off ticket called 50 Years!  is being introduced in February. The contest will offer a Maryland all-time top prize for a scratch-off of $5 million. Three of those $5 million prizes will be offered.

“It’s exciting for us to mark this moment in history and share it with our players, retailers and all of Maryland,” Maryland Lottery & Gaming Director John Martin said of the State Lottery’s 50th anniversary and the plans associated with it.

In February, another promotion will launch -- the 50th Anniversary Cash Bash Promotion. That’s still another chance for players to win up to $5 million by entering eligible scratch-offs and draw game tickets. That 50th Anniversary Cash Bash Promotion has a dramatic conclusion at the Maryland State Fair in September, where 10 finalists will vie for a grand prize of up to $5 million.

Since 1973, lottery ticket sales have generated more than $31.5 billion in prizes to players and contributed more than $18.6 billion to the State of Maryland, making the Lottery one of the state’s leading revenue sources.

Of course, Maryland mobile sports betting also made its debut in November as an additional source of state revenue.

In fact, Maryland sportsbooks in the first nine days accumulated a handle of $186 million.

Additional Lottery Events

The Maryland State Lottery has other events planned in 2023. Those include:

  • On Jan. 2 the Maryland Lottery launched its first 50th anniversary-themed product, the $1 We’re 50 Win $50 FAST PLAY game.
  • Beginning Jan. 23, customers can look for the Gold Multiplier family of games. Those include four scratch-offs ranging in price from $1 to $10. Players can enter non-winning tickets into the Gold Multiplier Second-Chance Promotion for the chance to win one of five $50,000 prizes.
  • Maryland’s $50 scratch-off joins other instant millionaire-makers in the state. There’s a $30 scratch-off that can produce a $2 million top prize and a $20 scratch-off has a $1 million top prize.

While Maryland’s $50 scratch-off ticket with a $5 million prize is certainly impressive, it’s not the only one in the country.  Other states also have $50 scratch-offs. In fact, Texas has offered a $100 scratch-off ticket with a $20 million top prize.
