The Capitals Stanley Cup Odds Rise After Two Big Moves

The Capitals Stanley Cup Odds Rise After Two Big Moves

The Washington Capitals spent the offseason with almost no buzz around them, and their Stanley Cup odds reflected that. Two trades later, sportsbooks are treating this team completely differently. The Maryland sports betting market has adjusted accordingly, increasing the Capitals' Stanley Cup odds from +4500 to +1900. The additions of Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch have turned Washington into one of the more interesting stories of the summer, and there is still a massive wild card sitting in the middle of it all.

What The Odds Represent

FanDuel posted its opening line for the 2026 27 season on June 15, one day after Carolina won the Cup. The Capitals came in at +4500, which put them near the bottom of the board and reflected a roster that missed the playoffs and lacked a true scoring punch up front.

By July 1, the first day of free agency, that number had fallen all the way to +1900. That is not a small tweak. That is a full reevaluation of the roster from oddsmakers who watched Washington make two of the more aggressive moves of the summer. Covers.com tracked a similar swing on other books, reporting that the Kyrou and Tuch additions shortened the Capitals' odds from +4500 to +2500, and noted that Washington still had over 12 million dollars in cap space even after adding both players.

Ovechkin is still the biggest question left

None of this even factors in the one decision that could change everything. Alex Ovechkin has not said whether he is playing a 22nd season or walking away from the game for good. He turns 41 in September, and everyone around the organization has said this is a decision he gets to make on his own timeline.

According to RMNB, the only contract currently on the table for Ovechkin is a one-year deal for next season, and a deal like that would almost certainly come with some kind of farewell tour attached, whether he wants one or not. Ovechkin told The Hockey Writers back in June that he would have an answer in July, saying "I'm for sure" about making his call once free agency opened.

If he comes back, Washington suddenly looks like a team nobody wants to face in April. Pairing the league's all-time leading goal scorer with two new top six forwards changes the entire complexion of that lineup. If he retires, the Capitals still improved themselves in a real way this summer, but the ceiling comes down without him in the mix.

Whatever he decides, Maryland betting apps will certainly adjust the odds based on whatever Ovechkin chooses to do. A team that opened the summer buried at +4500 sitting at +1900 on day one of free agency says all you need to know about how much confidence is building around this roster.
